North and Central Vietnam 2018

North and Central Vietnam 2018

11 Days · 6 Rounds · 9 - 19 June 2018

Vietnam is one of the World’s hottest golfing destinations. Combine great courses with unsurpassed hospitality, luxury resorts, fine dining, great shopping and cultural experiences and you have a recipe for an unforgettable holiday.

Our tour begins in in the northern capital of Hanoi, the country’s second largest city. The city is a fascinating blend of east and west, with Chinese influence from centuries of dominance, and French design from its colonial past. Here we play Van Tri Golf Club, one of the first exclusively private golf estates in Vietnam and Kings’ Island Golf Club, arguably the most scenic course in North Vietnam.

We then travel north to Ha Long Bay to spend a night aboard a luxurious replica of a traditional junk ship. Ha Long Bay is a World Heritage site recognized by UNESCO. The bay covers 1,500 square kilometers and is part the Tonkin Gulf in the South China Sea. Ha Long Bay has nearly 2,000 limestone islands and islets.

We then take a short 45 minute flight south to the beautiful central coast of Vietnam. Our home base here is Hoi An. Old Town Hoi An, the city’s historic district, is recognized as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century, its buildings and street plan reflecting a unique blend of influences, indigenous and foreign. Prominent in the city’s old town, is its covered “Japanese Bridge,” dating to the 16th-17th century. Here you’ll find sensational seafood, custom tailoring and crafts and an expansive beach, which our resort is located on.

Hoi An, Danang and the surrounding area is home to some of Asia’s best golf courses. While here we play Montgomerie Links, Colin Montgomerie’s only Asian creation, the Nick Faldo designed Laguna Lang Co Golf ClubBa Na Hills Golf Club, voted the World’s Best New Golf Club in 2016 and Da Nang Golf Club, designed by Greg Norman who quipped while on a site visit “The fact is, you’d be doing a very poor job to make a boring course out of a site like this.”

Day One: Saturday 9th June 2018

Arrival into Hanoi. Vietnam is lucky in so far as it possesses tropical year round golf weather, an expansive coastal shore, and temperate central and northern regions. You will be welcomed at Hanoi airport and transported to our hotel for check in. This evening we meet with our fellow travellers and kick off the tour with a welcome dinner including drinks.

Day Two: Sunday 10th June 2018

After breakfast we travel to Kings Island Golf Club, arguably the most scenic course in North Vietnam. The golf resort lies on the shores of the Dong Mo reservoir 36 kilometers from Hanoi. In a uniquely Vietnamese touch, access to the course is by boat. As might be expected, water plays a central role in the course design and comes into play on 13 of the 18 holes. Many of the hidden greens require accurate carries over the lake or swampy terrain. A favorite hole among players of the course is the par five thirteenth, with the tee shot having to clear a gorge.

Day Three: Monday 11th June 2018

After breakfast at our hotel we play Van Tri Golf Club, located 30 minutes from Hanoi city center. It was North Vietnam’s first exclusively private golf estate. The golf course was designed by renowned architect, Peter Rousseau and as so presents the traditional values and solid approach that is forever exciting and challenging to play; one that will certainly stand the test of time. Van Tri is visually stunning as the right balance of blending together colors, textures, heights and elements of stone, water, sand, grass and trees to provide a great variety that defines each and every individual hole.

Day Four: Tuesday 12th June 2018

After breakfast we depart Hanoi for Ha Long Bay. Ha Long, a World Heritage site recognized by UNESCO, attracts around 90% of the visitors coming to Vietnam. The bay covers 1,500 square kilometers and is part the Tonkin Gulf in the South China Sea. Ha Long Bay has nearly 2,000 limestone islands and islets. We stay one night oboard a luxurious replica junk ship where all meals are included. Sample some fresh seafood, admire the beauty of Ha Long and relax.

Day Six: Thursday 14th June 2018

After breakfast we head to Montgomerie Links, Colin Montgomerie’s only Asian creation. The site has an amazing beachscape, which makes the perfect palette for this links style course. Moving boldly over wispy Casuarina pines and sand dunes Montgomerie Links gives you the feeling of being in Scotland without the cold temperatures you find in the British Isles! The golf course takes advantage of its close proximity to the Marble Mountains. In addition to excellent golf course, there is a large contemporary club house. After golf we travel back to our hotel we we get the chance to relax and enjoy Hoi An. Tonight we celebrate the mid point of our trip with dinner and drinks.

Day Seven: Friday 15th June 2018

Today we play Laguna Lang Co, which is located between the ancient city of Hue to the north and Danang to the south. Designed by Sir Nick Faldo, the Laguna Lang Co Golf Club is an 18 holes championship golf course which takes advantage of the variety of existing environments with golf weaving between trees, over rice padi fields and streams, through impressive rock features and alongside the beach.

Day Eight: Saturday 15th June 2018

Today is a rest day. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and relax by the pool. Perhaps a massage is on the cards to assist with recovery after a few days of solid golfing. Head into Hoi An, with its lovely wooden shop-homes which was set up in the 16th century. It has been revived in the 20th century to commemorate the long history of Vietnamese international trade. Wandering through its protected old town, visitors are transported back to the 16th century when Hoi An was Vietnam’s most important trading port.

Day Nine: Sunday 17th June 2018

After breakfast at our resort hotel you we travel to Ba Na Hills Golf Club, 25 minutes inland from Danang. The Da Nang golf course is the first Luke Donald designed course not only in Asia, but the world and is managed by IMG. Ba Na Hills is laid out in several valleys of the surrounding mountain ranges. The Ba Na Hills mountain course has a diverse mix of natural topography and vegetation. The holes at higher elevation have nice vantage points with spectacular views of the valleys below. The site has a fair amount of elevation change and many natural features like large hardwood trees and streams that meander tough several of the holes. At 7,858 yards in length the par-72 golf course provides a good balance of challenge and enjoyment for golfers of all skill levels. The varying lengths of each hole and different lies resulting from the rolling hills and elevations changes ensure that a great variety of shots are played throughout the 18 holes

Day Ten: Monday 18th June 2018

Today we play Danang Golf Club. Reminiscent of both Scottish links golf and Carolina sand hills golf, Greg Norman has created arguably Vietnam’s best course. Built on the
sandy loam soil of Danang Beach, fairways are generous and there is restrained use of water. However shots must be carefully placed to give players a chance to go for the pins on the well bunkered and undulating greens. The fairways are lined and well defined by long needle pines, so miss into the trees and you will be forced to punch off the sand and pine needles along a safe line just to get back into play. More so than other areas of Vietnam, the wind can play be a major factor on the central coast. This evening we celebrate the trip with dinner and drinks, having played great golf courses and met new friends.
